Medical assistance for caretakers
If a patient cannot work because they care for a sick household member, they may be eligible for medical assistance
My patient cannot work because she cares for her mother
with Alzheimer’s disease. She has asked me to write a letter. What do I
say? A person can be eligible for medical assistance if they are caring for
someone in the household (child or adult) who is ill or has a disability and
there is no one else in the household to care for that person. The letter must
describe the kind of care which the individual needs – feeding, bathing, safety
assessment. The letter must state the disability of the person being cared
for.

Will my patient need other documentation to get this
kind of medical assistance?
Yes. The patient still needs to meet income,
citizenship, and resource or savings requirements for medical assistance. This
information is for the County Assistance Office and is not the physician’s
responsibility. He or she will also need to provide proof that no one else lives
in the household who can care for the person (e.g. pay stubs from others who are
working).
